Israel Kamakawiwo’ole (1959–1997) was a famous Hawaiian singer and ukulele player. Despite his short life, he became a national hero of Hawaii, where he is still very popular and revered.
He began playing the ukulele in early childhood. He played in the group The Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau, which he formed together with his brother and three friends. The group released five albums and made a series of successful tours.
Because of his large build (at a height of 190 cm, he weighed 343 kg), his kind nature and his sincere love of life, in Hawaii he was nicknamed “the Gentle Giant.”
His music conveys sincere love, warmth and selfless care. Israel’s pleasant voice seems to lull you to sleep, and the sounds of the ukulele seem to carry you to the shores of the Pacific Ocean, where we can enjoy wonderful weather and beautiful waves.
Let us remember this magnificent Hawaiian musician together and enjoy his enchanting playing.
