The film is based on the story of the same name by the American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald.
On the day the First World War ends, a child is born into the family of a wealthy industrialist, and the wife dies in childbirth. The boy is born with a defect: his skin is old and wrinkled.
Seeing the newborn “monster,” the grief-stricken father leaves the child on the doorstep of a home for the elderly. The little old man’s adoptive mother becomes Queenie, a young Black woman who works there as a caregiver, and she gives him the name Benjamin.
Despite such a strange condition and unusual affliction, the hero lived a full and happy life. Growing ever stronger and younger, he lives his life in reverse. And in time he realizes that, because of his body’s peculiarity of growing younger, he cannot live out his life with the person he loves or become a real father to his child.
A film that reflects on the meaning of life through the relationship between a person and Time. Time inexorably brings us closer to the end, whether we were born as an infant or as a very old man. But it is also time that gives every moment its value. Only memory and love can turn Time back. And the clock in the film that runs backward is a symbol of this memory.
