“The Dressmaker” (Australia, 2015)

A stylish young woman with a compact Singer sewing machine arrives in the godforsaken Australian town of Dungatar. This is Tilly Dunnage, who 25 years earlier was driven out of her hometown, accused of murdering a boy.

The ugly duckling of her childhood, persecuted by children and adults alike, has turned into a beautiful Woman with a good sense of humor. Having traveled through the fashion capitals of the world, she has achieved a great deal in life. But her own mother and the local residents are not happy about the young woman’s arrival.

The heroine has a unique talent: with her outfits she turns plain girls into picture-perfect beauties. And with this skill she wins popularity among the women. But things are not so simple. Everyone remembers the circumstances under which Tilly left the town. And her own fragmentary childhood memories give her no peace. She looks for ways to come to terms with her past and to throw off her feeling of guilt by punishing those who wronged her.

Despite the dark events, the film is incredibly beautiful and vivid. Every dress worn by Tilly and the other heroines is a work of art in the spirit of 1950s haute couture. Created especially for the enchanting Kate Winslet (Tilly) and the other actors in the film, they are so beautiful and harmonious that they were displayed in an exhibition at the Australian gallery Ayers House Museum.

Kate brilliantly plays the main character with striking feminine strength and charm (the scene on the football field) and, at the same time, as vulnerable and fragile. A Woman who declares her right to love and be happy, to live and create, and not to depend on the curses and judgments of other people.

Watch and enjoy!

With love, Tatyana.
